About Dr. de Guzman Strong

Dr. de Guzman Strong is Associate Scientist in the Department of Dermatology and Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine at Henry Ford Health + Michigan State University Health Sciences (HFH + MSU). She received her PhD in Human Genetics at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and completed post-doctoral training at the National Human Genome Research Institute. She was recruited to the Division of Dermatology (Department of Medicine) at Washington University in St. Louis as an Assistant Professor to build an independent program for skin barrier research. The impact of her research on skin barrier diversity, and its contributions to understanding health disparities led to her recruitment by the Center for Cutaneous Biology and Immunology and the Henry Ford Cancer Institute at Henry Ford Health in Detroit.

Dr. de Guzman Strong is a longtime member of the Society of Investigative Dermatology with extensive editorial experience. She has been a regular presenter at the SID meetings and has been active in committee and leadership activities for SID programming. She has served as an Associate Editor of JID Innovations since the journal’s inception in 2021 with additional editorial experience with the Journal of Investigative Dermatology, Frontiers in Cellular and Infection Microbiology and PLoS Genetics.

Selection Process

JID Innovations was launched in January 2021, with Russell P. Hall, III, MD appointed as its inaugural Editor. As his tenure approaches its planned conclusion at the end of 2025, SID and ESDR initiated a formal search for the journal’s next Editor.

A joint selection committee of members from both SID and ESDR led the process, following a global call for applications that attracted a strong pool of qualified candidates with diverse backgrounds.  The committee reviewed applications and conducted interviews to identify the strongest candidate to guide the journal into its next chapter.

At the conclusion of the interview process, Dr.  de Guzman Strong distinguished herself with a compelling editorial vision for JID Innovations that emphasizes collaborative, team-based science, integration of skin research across systems, and rigorous, high-integrity peer review to strengthen the journal’s value to the skin research community. Ultimately, Dr. de Guzman Strong’s innovative research background, editorial acumen, and dedication to serving the field of investigative dermatology differentiated her as the top choice to lead JID Innovations beginning next year.

Dr. Hall will work closely with Dr. de Guzman Strong throughout this editorial transition. “It has been an honor to serve as Editor for JID Innovations with an exceptional Editorial Board,” said Dr. Hall.

“Dr. de Guzman Strong has served as an Associate Editor during our initial 5 years and is uniquely qualified to serve as the new Editor. I am confident that she will be an exceptional Editor committed to the mission and growth of JID Innovations.”

“I am truly honored to be selected as incoming Editor of JID Innovations,” said Dr. de Guzman Strong. “I want to congratulate Dr. Russell Hall for his outstanding leadership as our inaugural Editor. I look forward to furthering the success of the journal with our SID and ESDR members and beyond by recognizing scientific innovation for skin connectivity and its impact to health.”
