This 11 February, on the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, ESDR launches Women in Science 2026 by ESDR, a campaign highlighting the need for inclusivity in dermatology research.

Research shows that sex and gender differences have not yet been consistently evaluated or integrated into study design or translated into clinical practice. Women remain underrepresented in clinical studies, leading to gaps in knowledge, treatment strategies, and patient safety. The campaign underscores that better data is critical for better science.

One presented approach is TRIALher, a platform designed to improve engagement and participation of women in clinical studies. By connecting researchers with more diverse patient populations, TRIALher helps ensure study results are robust, reliable, and relevant to everyone.

The campaign features five portraits paired with key facts about sex and gender disparities in research, designed to prompt reflection and action among researchers, clinicians, policymakers, and the wider dermatology community.

We would like to thank  Sarah Preis, who published a systematic review of sex and gender differences (JEADV March 2025 DOI:10.1111/jdv.20256), and Hyatt Antognini Amin, Founder, TrialHer, a health research start-up, who gave their time for an interview and who are working on this important issue.
