The University of Cologne is one of the largest and most research-intensive universities in Germany, offering a wide range
of subjects. With its six faculties and its interfaculty centres, it offers a broad spectrum of scientific disciplines and internationally outstanding profile areas, supported by the administration with its services.

Pre-mRNA splicing catalyzed by a large dynamic ribonucleoprotein
machine called spliceosome represents a critical step in the regulation
of gene expression, contributing to a marked expansion of proteome
diversity and functional complexity in metazoans. In contrast, spliceosome malfunction hallmarks age-associated tissue decline and a wide
range of diseases, including cancer and neurodegeneration.

» To study the mechanisms underlying spliceosome assembly and
functional plasticity under physiological, stress and disease conditions in Drosophila and mouse models combining genetics, cell
biology and biochemistry with omic approaches and imaging
» To investigate what renders different transcripts, cells, and tissues
sensitive to aberrant splicing
» To elucidate how spliceosome malfunction impacts genome stability and contributes to loss of tissue homeostasis, premature
aging and diseases
