ESDR Academy for Future Leaders

The inaugural "ESDR Academy for Future Leaders in Dermatology" was held in Cascais, Portugal from 8-11 November 2011 and was organized by Alexander Enk and the ESDR office. The list of mentors at this year's academy included Georg Stingl, Vincent Piguet, Frank Nestle, Michael Schön, Mona Stahle, Giampiero Girolomoni, John McGrath, Chris Griffiths, Antonio Costanzo, Carien Niessen and Andrew Finlay. The aim of the "Academy" is to foster excellent young dermatologists from Europe. The program is financially supported through an educational grant from Abbott. We received 74 applications and retained 22 people. The selected applicants presented their research through oral presentations and posters and had access to mentors over a two-day period. Details of the 2012 Academy have already been posted on the ESDR website: http://www.esdr.org

ESDR-EADV Summer Research Workshop

This year the Summer Research workshop was held from 18-22 July in Rome. This year's course focused on research and imaging techniques in UV and Pigmentation and was organized by Prof Mauro Picardo, Prof Antonio Costanzo and Ildiko Papp (EADV). The course was hosted by the San Gallicano Dermatological Institute. The list of speakers included, A. Costanzo, E. Healy, L. Larue, M. Picardo, M. Röcken, Reynolds, E. Tschachler, T. Schwarz and S. Weatherhead. The course was significantly oversubscribed and we were only able to select 22 participants from 12 countries. We received excellent feedback from the participants both to the relevance to one's research and training, usefulness of practical sessions and journal club/research presentations, interest/usefulness of seminars as well as the influence on career and organization of the course. The course provided excellent opportunities for networking and for the first time at this year's ESDR meeting in Barcelona, we ran an alumni evening for past participants of the 2010 and 2011 research courses. This was combined with participants selected for the 2011 ESDR Academy for Future Leaders in Dermatology and we are planning similar alumni events in Venice in 2012.

In 2012 the EADV/ESDR Summer Course titled "Research and Imaging Techniques on Clinical Research and Epidemiology" will be held in from 16-20 July 2012 in Rotterdam, The Netherlands in collaboration with EDEN. The course is organized by Profs. Nick Reynolds (ESDR), Erwin Tschachler (EADV), Dr. Tamar Nijsten (ESDR/EADV), and Carsten Flohr (EDEN). The application deadline is 29 February 2012 and attendance is limited to 25 places. All participants will receive an attendance certificate, free course materials, board (catering) during the course and accommodation. Members of the EADV and/or ESDR are eligible to receive an educational grant. This course is primarily aimed at Dermatology Residents/Trainees who have an interest in pursuing research but have not yet undertaken a substantive block of research time. This year course comprises a mixture of seminars/lectures, significant practical "hands on" experience of research techniques - with an emphasis on clinical research and epidemiology - and either a journal club or research presentations by the participants. The list of speakers includes Carsten Flohr, Loes Hollestein, Sinead Langan, Luigi Naldi, Martino Neumann, Tamar Nijsten, Nick Reynolds, Peter van de Kerkhof, Phyllis Spuls, André Uitterlinden, Maarten Vermeer, Esther de Vries, Hywel Williams. A more detailed program will follow shortly and further information can be found on the EADV website (http://www.eadv.org/fostering-courses/current-residents-courses/eadvesdr-summer-course/) or by contacting This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
